The Destin City Council on Monday passed a motion to set Gulf Shore Drive at 35 mph for the four lane segment and 30 mph for the two lane portion. Azalea Drive speeds rise from 30 mph to 35 mph. A four way stop will be installed at Azalea Drive Palmetto and Stahlman Avenue.
Kelly Street near Destin Elementary School experiences extreme congestion during peak pick up and drop off times from about 7:20 to 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. Destin deputies directing traffic urge motorists to avoid the area due to heavy traffic and hazardous conditions.
Okaloosa County commissioners urge state funds for reef upgrades near Destin. If approved, Florida Reefs No. 12 and No. 14, known as the 18s and the Bridge Rubble, would receive improvements with about 30 000 dollars in funding from the Department of Natural Resources.
Republicans lead in absentee ballots while Democrats claim rapid gains. In Tallahassee, Mike Hamby notes strong Democratic outreach this year. Local efforts cost about 1200 dollars on literature. Richard Albertson says Republicans out-organize in absentee voting, citing historic success. City Manager Jack Dorman said Destin will bring on a third deputy next month to boost neighborhood patrols and extend coverage hours. Candidate Rudy Sutton says he has no quarrel with the PAC and continues door knocking and distributing literature amid the campaign.
Area officials graded their progress on the governor's Resource Management Plan by rewriting a September DCA report. They contrast a negative state view with a positive Destin and Okaloosa and Walton counties record. County Commissioner Bill Peebles says the report reflects what has been accomplished.
The Nomads of Eglin's 38th Tactical Fighter Wing repeat as overall William Tell champions at Tyndall AFB. Col George Forster 33rd commander hails the second straight title after a top performance against nine Air Force teams. Sgt Jose Matos praises the team's effort and precision with five polished F-15s.
