The Destin City Council approved 500 on Monday to buy a community Christmas tree and decorations. Location remains undecided with possible sites at the Community Center or the old Rodeo Dock near the Destin Bridge. Officials prioritize a vandalism safe location.
The Destin planning commission schedules a Thursday workshop at 7 p.m. in City Hall to discuss an ordinance on signs including eight and portable signs and a requirement to withstand 110 mph winds. Public participation is invited.
Environmental Waste Systems spokesman Jon Monteleone said schedules will change within 30 days and a firm date will be announced to residents beforehand. In the future the company plans to collect garbage in Destin only on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Firefighters from Mary Esther Fort Walton Beach Okaloosa Island Ocean City Wright Florosa and Destin participate as they prepare to jointly respond to hazardous material spills and area incidents.
The Mid-Bay Bridge Authority seeks about 300000 for planning and design with options including the gas tax and the Toll Facilities Revolving Trust Fund. DOT says loans up to 500000 are possible, repaid from bonds or profits, with seven years to repay. Authority moves to establish a budget committee as it weighs financing and potential bonds.
Destin City Council approved over 42000 for field improvements near Destin Elementary School. Funding covers lighting, two backstops, storage and concession facilities, bleachers, dugouts, score boards, public address system, scoring tower, sod, fencing and bathrooms. Recreation spokesman Bill Shirah welcomed the move and staff will seek bids to begin the project.
Bill Platt, a military pilot with 6,000+ flight hours across 15 aircraft, builds an experimental amateur-built gyroplane in his Destin home. The auto-gyro, 23 foot rotor, uses rotor wind to turn instead of a direct engine drive, and is nearing FAA certification.
