Alcohol the Deadliest Drug for Okaloosa Students

Fred Mangum and a panel at a North Florida Press Club forum warned alcohol tops the drug problem for Okaloosa County students. He noted 60 to 75 yearly drug cases in secondary schools and said many offenses involve beer on school property after games.

Emerald Shores subdivision granted 60-day extension by Walton County

Walton County commissioners granted Emerald Shores a 60 day extension to complete water system installation and road work south of Freeport. They denied a request to substitute corrugated steel piping for concrete culverts and required new bonds to guarantee the work. The extension includes posting cash, a performance bond, or an irrevocable letter of credit.

Phillips Inlet Bridge Realignment Project Proposed

The DOT plans a new bridge 10 to 20 feet north of the existing structure near the Walton County line in Bay County. It will be 46 feet 9 inches wide with two driving lanes and two emergency lanes. Traffic will remain on the existing bridge as a detour until completion, then the old bridge will be demolished. The Corps notes the realignment avoids a stout bridge that would harm wetlands. Some environmentally sensitive areas on both east and west Phillips Inlet sides will be filled. The project, on DOT’s list for years, is funded for fiscal year 1988-89.
