Patricia Gould reports on infrared tests at Destin Bridge by the U S Air Force. Technicians from the 3246th Test Wing at Eglin Air Force Base monitor heat signatures and infrared imagery to model missile guidance on a typical Florida bridge.
An Okaloosa County official said UPS operated cargo flights at Destin Airport for about a month without commissioners’ permission. The county rejected UPS’s later request to use the facility on the Panama City Pensacola route. Airport official Coy Thomason acknowledged he did not officially notify the board and that UPS began April 16 with small aircraft. He said UPS has since ceased operations after the denial. Greg Brashears of UPS declined comment. Commissioner Mike Mitchell called the omission an understatement and said UPS jumped the gun awaiting approval. Destin Airport Manager Walt Brigman noted the issue involved UPS and the county, with no control over air traffic.
Karen MacGrogan reports on dangerous rip currents along Destin and South Walton beaches where several spring fatalities have occurred. Local experts warn many visitors lack awareness and no lifeguards protect unprotected beaches, increasing risk as heavy surf channels water back out to sea.
Mike Gebhardt, an 18 year old from Okaloosa Island, competes in the U.S. windsurfing trials in Long Beach for the lone Olympic berth. He credits European rivals as tougher, notes rigorous training in Melbourne and Europe, and asserts his youth gives him a psychological edge.
