Destin Chamber Opposes Federal Fisheries Intervention

The Destin Chamber of Commerce board agreed to oppose federal intervention in Florida fishing policy after a federal rule allowed purse seines for King Mackerel, conflicting with three decades of state ban. They plan to send a letter to lawmakers and the Commerce secretary asserting state rights. The meeting also touched on university studies, festival plans, and a new Rodeo Captains Award with a $500 bond for the top Red Snapper or King Mackerel boat.

State claims Holiday Isle sand as state land ownership

The Department of Natural Resources asserts sand from Holiday Isle, including material on the Waterview Towers site, is state property dredged from a water body. Officials told contractor Lester Construction and property owner Wallace C. Yost they cannot remove the sand privately. The dispute involved Pointe Destin and Waterview Towers exchanges, with Corps approval contingent on state concurrence, and a lack of clear jurisdiction noted by county officials.
