Vanita Tripe Dean Torrense of Jan and Dean teams with Beach Boys members for Budweiser Spring Break 83 in Destin. The free beach concert at Wayside Park on Okaloosa Island marks a high point in college crowds at major beach stops. Torrense hints Destin could host more next year if this event succeeds. The act, backed by Endless Summer Beach Band, has drawn 10,000 to 25,000 in Padre Island and other southern spots. The show begins Thursday at 2 p.m. and stays on the beach near the surf. Torrense notes the surf label is more lifestyle than literal and teases a broader California outdoor vibe. The duo recently recorded a hit-title album with help from the Beach Boys and others. Torrense looks forward to the gig but anticipates fatigue from touring. Continued on Page 9A.

Beach Party Draws Crowd at Henderson Beach Park
A windblown crowd of nearly 1,000 gathered as Gov. Bob Graham opened Henderson Beach State Recreation Area noting the land’s public park purpose. Henderson touts the 200 plus acres sold to the state for preservation, part of a 13.1 million dollar purchase securing 6600 feet of Gulf sand and dunes. Local officials and state DNR leaders joined in praising the effort and its regional impact.
