City councilmen informally grilled three top prospects for city attorney and will make a recommendation next week. The finalists Burns, Miller, and Moore were chosen from 11 applicants. The council sought more details on three semi permanent City Hall sites including former Perfect Exposure, REI office, and Safe Harbor Church, to rent or possibly buy. The Rodeo Office use prompts space needs.
Floridian grocers warn last week's sub freezing temperatures will lift fruit and vegetable costs across Destin. Rex Wilson of Santa Rosa Beach IGA says soft fruits and citrus may rise 20 to 50 percent, tomatoes up 100 percent, with Mexican and Canadian imports filling the shortfall. Cooper Watkins of Destin IGA notes tomatoes up 20 to 50 percent and citrus still uncertain, while supplies shift from Florida to California and Mexico as farmers suffer heavy losses. Damages in Florida's winter crop range from 50 percent to full loss, with Homestead area hardest hit. the Crop and Livestock Service estimates some citrus loss but adequate Valencia orange supplies for fresh markets.
Senate Bill 6 and House Bill 79 companion measures aim to ban local bars from offering free or reduced drinks and two for one promos. They would prohibit large containers and drinking games on premises, effectively ending Happy Hours promotions. Rep. James Ward of Fort Walton Beach criticizes the bills as ineffective.
Destin bar owners and managers react to a proposed law banning free or discounted drinks and contests. Harbor Docks owner Charles Morgan says happy hour would not hurt his business if curtailed, noting a nationwide anti drink driving trend. Green Knight manager Patricia Garipay supports ending two for one deals but questions eliminating happy hour.
