Destin Deputies Cover One-Man Shifts Despite Off-Duty Relief
Okaloosa County assigns three Destin deputies to one-man shifts with a relief deputy for two days, two afternoons, and one night weekly. Sunday night lacks a regular deputy. Fort Walton Beach personnel fill in. Sheriff Gilbert says life threatening cases only pull Deputies from other areas. The island is four to five minutes away, with Destin usually covered from Brooks Bridge. The department plans four more deputies in April to east Brooks Bridge, boosting per-shift staffing.
