Destin moves to hire its first city manager and over seven resumes already arrived from local and out of town candidates. Interim candidates may serve three to six months until a permanent replacement is chosen. March 1, 1985 is the cutoff for permanent applicants, with at least two years in city management sought and a salary range of 30,000 to 40,000 annually.
The Destin Coast Guard Station logged subfreezing readings at 1 to 5 a.m. Monday, and Destin Airport saw a low near 3 degrees. Pensacola Airport reached an all time record low of 5 degrees between 6 and 7 a.m. Monday, breaking prior daily and monthly records. Meteorologist Frank Bowen noted the old January low of 8 degrees from 1982 and the all time low of 7 degrees from 1899. Panama City also reported 7 degrees in the same window. Continued on Page 8A.
Destin City Council approved six projects and formed two planning and zoning boards amid protests. The unanimous votes allowed Destin Business Center, Sea Loft Condominium, Harbor Oaks Condominium, Magnolia Bay Club, a Comfort Inn addition, and 800 Indian Trail Condominium to proceed, despite a county moratorium on building permits. Island House Condominium was tabled for further study due to setback variances dating to 1981 and Gulf Shore Drive location.
Richard R. Graybill appointed general manager of the Destin Log. The announcement by Robert H. Hartmann of Scripps Howard cites Graybill’s experience in advertising business and editorial management across several papers. Jack Becklund will continue as publisher of the twice weekly Destin Log.
