Early tomato crop over in Caroline county report
The county reports an abundance of early tomatoes with yields well over 10 tons per acre, but prices dropped to 10 to 48 cents a basket as disposal proved difficult. The late crop is small, likely avoiding a surplus, while national trends hint at firmer canned tomato prices this winter and spring. Corn prices hit a record 2.67 per bushel in Chicago, signaling higher meat and feed costs ahead. Many farmers are slaughtering gilts and brood sows, potentially reducing 1948 spring pig production. New corn is maturing in Caroline, with farmers delivering to mills at about 1.50 to 1.60 per bushel. Europe faces a hard winter due to coal and food shortages, with strikes reducing British coal output. The Marshall plan and American aid are urged to aid Europe’s reconstruction and its impact on the U.S. future.
