Alfalfa Spraying Urged For Chickweed And Wild Turnip
University of Maryland extension weed control specialist Dr. Paul W. Santelmann urges soon spraying alfalfa to curb chickweed and wild turnip. He notes these annual winter weeds invade Maryland fields from September to spring, with turnip increasing this year and chickweed posing a threat to alfalfa stands and disease exposure. He outlines chemical options including CIPC and Dinitro, warns CIPC harms grasses, and details MCP use as emergency measure with timing above 60 degrees and careful calibration. A new Fact Sheet FS 129 will soon be available free from county agents titled Control Winter Annual Weeds in Alfalfa.

Maryland Farmers Vote on 1957 Corn Program This December
Maryland farmers will vote on December 11 in a referendum to decide between the Soil Bank base acreage program and the acreage allotment program for 1957. If the allotment program wins, the national corn allotment will total 37,288,889 acres across 24 states, with various county impacts. If the Soil Bank base acreage is chosen, total corn acreage apportioned will be 51 million acres. Both options require substantial farmer votes and prior notices on base acreages and allotments.
