Cattle Guards Ease Gate Closing Times In Maryland
Cattle guards are growing on Maryland dairy and beef farms as substitutes for gates. Imported from the West they save time by eliminating opening and closing gates and reduce the danger of gates left open. Ray Carpenter, University of Maryland agricultural engineer, defines a cattle guard as a slatted road bed across a ditch that animals won t cross but which allows tractors and machinery to pass. County agents hold a copy of Cattle Shelters and Equipment showing three guard designs.
