President Eisenhower carried a record margin in his 1956 reelection over Adlai Stevenson. He won about 30.0 million votes to Stevenson’s 21.7 million, a massive popular vote margin, but failed to gain a Republican-controlled Congress as Democrats strengthened their House and Senate majorities. This marked the first time a Republican secured a second term in 56 years.

A back door break in at Caroline Bowling Lanes after 2 a.m. Tuesday led to theft of cigarettes and about 1.50 to 100 in change, with two pinball machines and a music machine forced open. Trooper Myers and the Sheriff’s Office have a suspect in custody and continue the investigation. Earlier, Will’s Sporting Goods on Franklin Street was burglarized for about 200 in guns and sporting gear, with entry through a side window. the Denton Police Department, aided by the State Police, are investigating.

Denton celebrated Hallowe'en on Wednesday night October 31 with one of its largest crowds for the event. Denton Man Guilty Of Assault On Officers Fined Heavy
Denton laborer Roland Richardson of Denton Garment Co pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace and was convicted of assaulting Chief Whit and Officer Wessel. He received a $250 fine and costs and an 18 month sentence in the Maryland House of Correction, suspended. The charge of threatening to shoot officers carried the heavier penalty. The wife had sworn out a warrant over threats of bodily harm.

Mrs Eleanor Towers Duffey, widow of G Linden Duffey of Denton, was awarded 50000 in U S District Court after a 1954 auto collision on Holsinger's Lane between Denton and Ridgely. Defendants include the United States government and the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. Judge R Dorsey Watkins presided.
