Absence of Stuttering Among Indians Studied

Dr John Sindecor, UC Santa Barbara speech professor, lived months among the Shoshone and Bannock in southeastern Idaho. He interviewed 800 Indians and found no full blooded stutterers among 1,000 more observed. He notes lack of parental pressure to speak and that Indians speak fluently with sometimes poetic symbolism. The Indian language has no exact word for stuttering.
