Miss Mar Jane Layton of Preston High School won the county wide essay contest sponsored by local civic groups and American Legion posts. The county prize was a $100 United States Savings Bond. school winners received $25 Bonds. Narcotic Agents Speak At Denton Rotary Club

G Gregg Everngam, a former Denton native now practicing law in Silver Spring, was elected president of the Maryland State Junior Chamber of Commerce for 1952 1953 at the annual Cumberland convention. At its regular meeting the Denton Chamber of Commerce approved two motions to back a Maryland Girls and Boys State participation for a county boy and girl to attend Annapolis. A letter to Army Engineers and Rep Miller urged maintenance of a navigable Choptank River channel eight feet deep at mean low water and 100 feet wide through Pea liquor Shoals, noting current four to six-foot widths hamper oil tankers and fertilizer deliveries past Watts Creek, threatening local river traffic and commerce.

The Eastern Shore Public Service Company of Maryland filed new rate schedules with the Public Service Commission of Maryland to raise electric rates by about 10 percent beginning with July bills. Company officials cited higher operating costs, taxes, and construction costs, and said funds must attract investment for expansion on the Delmarva Peninsula. The proposal would net the company $212,338 for operations, with $234,501 paid in taxes. residential customers would see only small daily increases, about one cent per day for 50 kWh.

Bay Bridge Final Section Joins Across Chesapeake
