American Legion Auxiliary appeals to wear a poppy on Poppy Day May 24 to honor war dead and aid living veterans. Crepe paper poppies imitate the flowers growing between crosses in France and Belgium cemeteries, made by disabled veterans of World Wars and Korean War veterans aid.
The House moved to strengthen state fair trade laws to counter a Supreme Court ruling on price fixing. Senate committees debated larger foreign aid cuts, with talk of trimming up to a further billion. Veterans Administration to issue GI policy dividends totaling about 200 million to 5 million NSLI holders. President Truman urged a 1 1/2 billion flood insurance program via RFC to shield homeowners and business assets. A 16th annual School Safety Patrol Assembly drew 27 000 youths with 40 bands to Constitution Avenue, plus celebrations in many states.

The Greensboro WSCS of St. Paul's Methodist Church held its annual meeting on May 8 after a Tuesday business session. Mrs. G. W. Davis, a missionary from Egypt, spoke with slides while Betty Jean Bilbrough and Gwenn Riddleberger depicted Egyptian dress. The event featured a covered dish supper, musical numbers by Miss Alberta Porter and Miss Eva May Davis, and praise for a cooperative year led by President Mrs. Earl Passwater.

Caroline County Red Cross offers to pay tuition board lodging and materials for an over 18 to train as an instructor in swimming and life saving at National Aquatic Schools June 14 to 26 across eight camps in Massachusetts Pennsylvania New York Indiana and Connecticut. Emphasis on first aid instructor training to support civil defense and leadership in water safety for chapters and youth groups. Funeral services for 66 year old Robert Carroll Wilson, a farmer of Star and school bus driver for Queen Anne's County, were held at his son's home near Star. Burial followed at Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville. Survived by his wife Lena Townsend Denton, son Marion D Wilson of Star, and one grandson. Died in Marine Hospital, Baltimore after five weeks illness. Born at Bloomingdale Farm between Wye Mills and Queenstown, he previously lived in Denton. He was a Navy veteran.
Miss Mary E. Garey former librarian at St Johns College Annapolis died at her apartment on Bolton Street Baltimore after a long illness. She was daughter of the late Col Robert Garey and Vashti Saulsbury Garey of Denton. Survived by sister Mrs Caleb Winslow of Baltimore and brothers Col Enoch Garey of Los Angeles and James A Garey of Hartford. Funeral at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church Denton Saturday 3 p.m. conducted by Rev Robert Sutton. Burial in Denton Cemetery.
The Denton Community Club will meet at the Club House on Friday May 16 at 1 00 p m for a covered dish luncheon hosted by the new executive board members. Maryland and Delaware showers likely Saturday with possible late Friday start, slight cool change Saturday and Sunday, temperatures a few degrees below normal with highs 70 to 75 and lows from the low 40s in the mountains to the mid 50s in southern and eastern counties.
Thomas J. Wright, Greensboro Lions Club and Greensboro Athletic Association chair, announces the first annual Greensboro Soap Box Derby to be held July 4, 1952 at 10:00 a.m. at Four Corners Greensboro Md. The Maryland State Conference of Social Welfare will hold its Eastern Shore Regional Meeting in Cambridge on May 23, 1952. The forum gathers health welfare religion education and other social welfare sectors from nine Eastern Shore counties and neighboring states with 150 to 200 attendees expected. Co chairs Mrs. Ralph Dulany and James Hampton announce topics including Migrant Camp Child Problems and The Child of the Broken Home at St Pauls Methodist Church Cambridge.
The Young Adults across six Mardela District Church of the Brethren congregations sponsor a teacher training institute at Camp Mardela May 20 to 25. Dr S L Shively and Mrs Shively will teach courses in psychology with evening lectures from 7 30 to 9. The Rev E F Sherry notes the institute is interdenominational and there is no registration fee though an offering will be taken.
Piney 4-H met May 12 at Joyce DeFord's home with all members present. Roll call responses cited a visited place. Junior leader Joan Morgan taught chicken salad and Mrs Adams demonstrated deviled eggs as the group prepared lunch. Hot dogs, Pepsi, fruit jello, whipped cream, and cupcakes were served. Discussion covered 4-H camp at the Brethren camp the last week in June, with several members showing interest in attending. Next gathering is May 26 at Ruby and Jane Adams' home.
The Willing Workers Circle will meet at Mrs Boon Beauchamps home on Monday May 19 at 730 pm Hostesses are Mrs Minnie Thawley and Mrs Clarence Roe All members urged to attend.
A May Day program at Caro High School on May 8 showcased a world tour theme with dances from many nations, colorful costumes, flags, and a grand school parade. Peggy Callahan, a senior, was crowned queen by County Superintendent Stewart Fitzgerald, with a May Court and staff organizers guiding the event.
Caroline County GOP Women discuss anniversary dinner for the Caroline Women's Club at the Community House Denton. Fourteen new members added. President Mrs Kenneth V Corkran named Rebecca Voshell to join a Salisbury planning meeting for the Maryland Federation of Republican Women's Clubs at Ocean City August 2. Eastern Shore hosts to the state group. Local meetings suspended until September.
G A focus week concluded with a Greensboro Baptist Church banquet on Saturday May 10. The event featured a green white and gold GA room, meals by mothers, serving by men, a welcome by Eva Mae Williamson, a WMA greeting by Mrs Spicher, a poem to mothers by Nancy Schrieber, an illustrated story by Mrs Sue Snyder, and a Proverbs 31:10 31 recital by Charlotte Thornton. Nancy Thornton spoke on GA meaning, and Hazel Moyer outlined the GA aim with counsellor Mrs Irving Ober.
Harmony WiYF presents a three act comedy titled Two Days To Marry at Preston High School with curtain at eight tonight. Local residents are urged to attend for an evening of entertainment by a community group.
Maryland's Commission of State Forests and Parks announces new charges for park visitors this season. Fees cover car parking fifty cents at Sandy Point and Patapsco and twenty five cents at Gambrill, with season and multi-trip tickets available. Additional charges include fireplace use fifty cents, picnic tables twenty five cents, tenting fifty cents per day, and more to offset maintenance costs.
Pocomoke City Maryland hosts the Delmarva Chicken Festival from June 9 to 11 with many entries already received. General chairman Raymond Dryden warns that time is short and contest entries close May 24. Six contestants have entered the Miss Delmarva pageant on June 9, offering a top prize of either 500 dollars or a 750 dollar college scholarship. At the last PTA meeting nominations were submitted and ballots sent home for voting. Officers chosen for the 1952 53 term include President C S Bilbrough Vice President Robert Schreiber Secretary Mrs A T Bush Treasurer Dana McClung. Executive Committee members listed with names and affiliations.
The first Explorer Scout Ball for Tri-County District of Del Marva Council took place at St Michaels High School auditorium from 8 to 11 pm with about 50 explorers and their ladies. Mr. Green and his orchestra provided the music under Explorer Post 147 leadership.
Twenty FFA boys from Caroline High School will compete May 19 at Aston High School in the Eastern Shore Regional FFA Judging Contest. Dairy cattle, sheep, swine, beef cattle, poultry and milk are judged with results by University of Maryland officials. Cash prizes totaling 175 dollars are offered by the State Fair Board. The event aims to boost Eastern Shore youth into state contests and future regional sponsorship.
