Caroline Defeats Preston High 8-1 in Easy Victory

The Denton nine secured a comfortable 8-1 win over Preston last Tuesday, marking their fourth straight victory. Pitcher Blades Willoughby of Preston allowed nine walks and nine strikeouts before being relieved, while Dean scored Preston’s only run in the first inning. Denton’s offense expanded with four more runs in the second, sealing the lopsided affair. The piece also notes a historical sales high for U S Savings Bonds in 1948.

Delmarva Broilers: Few Survive Peninsula Route to Markets

The Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports that in April about 9.88 million Delmarva broilers were marketed, while 1.69 million were live birds. Most birds are removed at 16 peninsula plants via methods like the New York dress, leaving feet, heads and entrails intact or removed. Egg shortages elsewhere reduce regional production, and broiler shipments and hatching declines continued into mid-April.
