March welfare costs in Caroline county show expenditures of 15 652.95 with 73 new applicants for assistance. Of this total 1 963.37 covered salaries and administration. Old age aid 8 153.16. aid to dependent children 3 451.45. needy blind 101.99. foster care 839.19. County share 2 903.32. state 5 544.04. federal 7 205.59. 258 interviewed. 73 sought aid. 32 refused. Firemen To Hold Supper and Theatre Party in Denton

The Denton Volunteer Fire Co plans a chicken ham supper and theatre at the Denton Armory on Wednesday May 18. The event returns after wartime disruption with a prewar price of 1.00 for supper and show. Volunteers and food donations from townsfolk and farmers are urged. Edward H. Covell presides at a special meeting.

Caroline High School Glee Club Spring Concert

The Caroline High School Glee Club plans a spring concert Friday May 13 at 8 p m daylight time in the high school auditorium. Kent Grand Jury Cleared Trooper In Wilmer Shooting

Kent County grand jury in special session found insufficient evidence to convict in the April 21, 1949 Wilmer shooting of Harris Wilmer by a Maryland State Trooper. Foreman Fred W. Dumschott reported the panel’s decision to ignore a presentment and thanked jurors for their impartial effort. The court will file the report and release the jurors until further dates.

Seaford Symphonic Choir Plans Spring Concert May 9

The Seaford Symphonic Choir conducted by Dr. Webster Schmidt will give its second annual Spring Concert at Caroline High School on Monday May 9. Mrs. Marie Schmidt will be accompanist. Caroline county reappoints constables and names new magistrate

Caroline county commissioners reappointed two constables at large on Tuesday and approved the bond of W A Stewart Wright who succeeds William J Richards as trial magistrate at Denton. The renamed constables are Floyd Porter of Harmony and Frank Dennis of Denton.

Fire Company Drive Surpasses $1000 in Weekly Gifts

The Fire Company reports a weekly total of 1150.50 raised this drive and opens the fire house for public inspection Saturday 7 to 9 p m. One Killed Four Injured In Wye Mills Auto Crash

A late night crash near Wye Mills left one youth dead and four others injured. Arthur Biddle Jr., 21, of Ridgely, is in critical condition at Easton Memorial Hospital with a fractured skull. The deceased is James Walls, 19, of Goldsboro, killed when the car struck a pole at state route 404 and U S 50. Passengers Paul Mitchell, 21, Goldsboro, had a crushed hand. James Combs, 18, Goldsboro, suffered internal injuries. driver Paul Plugge of Ingleside is not charged, per Trooper George R. Cole. Walls’s funeral was held at Mt. Olive Methodist Church near Sandtown, Del., with burial beside the cemetery. He is survived by his mother Maude Melvin and Medford Melvin of Goldsboro, a sister Edith Lloyd of Millington, and half-brother Gene Helm in the army.

Caroline County Approves May 24 Bond Election Date

The Caroline County Commissioners set May 24 as the date for a special election to authorize a 750000 bond for school improvements. Polls will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST at standard polling places. The board had rejected a 2000000 bond proposal for a central senior high and other upgrades.

March Employment Declines Reflect Slow-Up In Business Activity

Caution in inventories and slower consumer buying trimmed employment over the past 30 days, per Maryland Employment Security head Russell S. Davis. Nonagricultural payrolls fell 1,700 to 688,100. manufacturing shed 2,600. iron and steel down 600. food and chemical plants down 600 each. Production pay held at $1.39 per hour and the workweek eased to 39.6 hours.

Harry F Knotts Jr the son of Mr and Mrs Harry F Knotts Sr of Denton is training as an Air Force Technician at the USAF Technical School at Fort Francis E Warren Wyoming Col John C B Elliott commanding officer announced. At the historic former cavalry post outside Cheyenne the Air Force trains airmen in many specialties including aviation engineer skills plumbing carpentry electricity welding bulldozer operation and many other trades for peacetime and wartime needs.
