Higher western production shifts demand away from bread to blending, leaving Maryland wheat mainly for animal feed at a discount. Storage and moisture issues on the Eastern Shore complicate loans and terminal storage, prompting farmers to consider feeding wheat, growing more feed crops, and adjusting cropping systems to support an animal economy.
