Fire destroys Ridgely’s historic second school building

A late night fire in Ridgely wiped out the town’s 1886 second school, once a recreation center and Red Cross class site. The blaze toppled the building’s tall cupola and bell tower, sparing nearby homes due to the surrounding open area and new wells. The prior school’s land once belonged to Rev. Greenbury W. Ridgely, with Amanda D. Saulsbury as its last teacher.
