Not July 4: early celebration of Independence Day
Researchers note the first celebration occurred July 1 1776, with John Nixon reading the Declaration from Independence Square. Bells rang all day as crowds cheered and a Venus observation platform stood nearby, leading to an annual tradition later broadened nationwide, though July 4 remains not a U.S. legal holiday.
