American Legion Caroline Post 29 hosts a Carnival at Caroline High School Grounds from June 7 to June 14. Legionnaires run rides including Ferris wheel Merry-go-round Dive Bomber and Chair-o-plane with free admission and nightly prizes. A Saturday matinee on June 12 offers half price rides for children and Van Billiard Shows back the event promoting a clean modern midway.

Harvey Fleetwood Dies Suddenly in Denton Store
Harvey Fleetwood died suddenly last Friday afternoon at the Fleetwood Store on Sixth Street Denton where he spent most of his life. Born December 21 1889 he built the family business and served as honorary Fire Company member. He is survived by his wife three sons and three grandchildren with burial in Denton cemetery after a Grace Methodist service.

Mrs. L. H. Thomas of Hobbs completes fifty years as the journal’s correspondent. Beginning at age fifteen with the Andersonstown letter, she later wrote Hickman notes near Delaware before moving to Hobbs thirty years ago. She took over Hobbs coverage from Mr. Merriken in her first year there and continues to chronicle local life.

Merriken Wins Honors At West Nottingham Academy
James W. Merriken son of Mr and Mrs Wilbert Merriken joined West Nottingham Academy in 1946 after two years in the United States Navy. He earned gold activity keys for Debating and Dramatics won the School Motto Prize for citizenship and academic effort and held senior class president status. He lettered in basketball and track, belonged to golf and Rifle clubs, and received a jeweled N for academic achievement as a senior honor student.
