Severe electrical storm hit the annual Farm Bureau picnic and 4-H calf show at Garland Lake near Denton last Friday. Calves judged by Dr Gordon Cairns of the University of Maryland in the morning, followed by farmerette judging by Mrs Lemuel Dudrow, Mrs Otis M Hastings, and Wilbur Jump. Irene Cohee of Preston won first prize of 10 dollars in the farmerette contest with Mary Elizabeth Eveland second and Lois Drews third. Peggy Meredith crowned champion. James A Reed reserve champion for purebred Holstein heifers. Donald Porter champion of purebred Guernsey. Edwin Love reserve in Guernsey class. Frederick Hathorne 75, a poultry farmer, died at his home near Hickman last week. A Vermont native, he is survived by two sisters Mrs. Ella Waite Shoreham and Mrs. Matilda Borden Bissell. His wife died in 1935. Funeral held at J. Virgil Moore and Son Denton with Rev. Edwin W. M. Johnson officiating. Burial was in Linchester Cemetery.

New Ferry Eastern Bay Makes First Run Friday
Maryland's new ferry Eastern Bay enters service on the Matapeake Sandy Point route. The 145 foot vessel travels 11 knots and carries about 35 vehicles and 450 passengers. Capt. Joseph P. Marshall will guide its first public run from Sandy Point at 3 p m. today. The State acquisition expands the ferry fleet to five vessels.

American Legion Buys Top Hat Dance Hall
The American Legion Post No. 29 led by Commander L Stevens Browne announced purchase of the dance hall known as the Top Hat near Denton for 6000 dollars. Included is about eight acres along Watts Creek. The post plans to renovate the building as meeting and recreation space and clear underbrush for picnics and outdoor fireplaces. Possession is expected around January 17 after the current lease ends.

Apprehended for Breaking and Entering at Oasis
On Thursday night July 22 a breaking and entering and larceny occurred at the Oasis near Denton. Police investigators Trp. Weir and Trp. McGee recovered a case of beer cigars chewing gum and a .32 revolver. Entry was via window. the cash register was ransacked. Kenneth Lane 25 of Denton and Guy Stewart a Wilmington Del juvenile were apprehended and confessed. Lane is held for trial before Judge Richards while Stewart will face Juvenile Court Judge Knotts.
