DDT Controls Japanese Beetles Warns Farmers in Caroline County
The County Agent urges immediate beetle spraying to protect corn and seed clover as Japanese beetles damage ornamentals and fruit trees like apple peach and plum. University of Maryland experts say DDT is effective in sprays or dust and warn against feeding forage crops treated with DDT to dairy or slaughter livestock. The effort includes 900 pounds of milky spore dust distributed in dairy pastures and lawns to curb grubs, coordinated by Dr. Ernest N. Cory. Also covered are seed quality tips for wheat barley and oats including moisture targets 14 percent and methods to reduce moisture before storage or with approved drying and heat treatments.
