GE Research Breaks Freezing Rules With Super Cooling

GE researchers in Schenectady cooled water, mercury, tin, and gallium far below their normal freezing points without solidifying. Water remained liquid 71 degrees below its point, mercury 72 below, tin 198 below, and gallium 125 below. Clouds without nuclei stay unfrozen, while introducing nuclei in super cooled clouds can trigger snow formation. Researchers created droplets of these metals in oil to study isolated super cooling without cross freezing.
