Girl Staters Return From Annapolis

Caroline County girls who attended Girls State in Annapolis report a program of government practice and social events. Beatrice Pinkine and Lou Horsey were sponsored by local groups. they learned about state government, met officials, toured the Naval Academy, and attended the inaugural ball.

The Camp Tred Avon Horse Show at Barnwell Track Easton on Sunday July 31 promotes a Talbot county children scholarship via the Talbot County Children's Aid Society. Denton Booster Night At Federalsburg Ball Park

Denton Booster night will be celebrated at the Easton Shore League baseball park in Federalsburg on Wednesday August 3. Federalsburg meets Rehoboth with 8 15 p m start and Denton native Harry Hughes is slated to pitch for Federalsburg. Denton Boy Scouts and Cubs travel in Carlton Mandrell’s bus with invitations extended to Denton Rotary and Lions Clubs and other locals.

Unemployment In Maryland Rises In June Labor Market Report

Maryland shed a 30 day unemployment rise with 679 500 people employed in nonfarm jobs. Manufacturing gained 1 1 1 00 in June mainly in nondurable goods while transportation equipment and machine industries fell. Job seekers reached 85 000, veterans made up 39 percent of male jobless, and Baltimore area accounted for most unemployment.

State Roads Commission awards three Shore Road projects

The State Roads Commission awarded three Eastern Shore highway contracts totaling over 500000. John D. Sheetz Construction Company will build the Slaughter Creek Bridge linking Taylor's Island to State Route 16, about 1121 feet long with a 33 foot center channel span and 22 foot roadway, at a 253634 authorization. Empire Construction Co. begins two bridges on the Queen Anne Hillsboro bypass over Norwich Creek and Tuckahoe Creek, 100 and 200 feet long with 30 foot roadways, under a 177211 authorization. Bids opened August 2 for Flatland Road grading drainage and surfacing from Route 20 toward Hanesville, estimated at 78426.

Sparklin Rites Held Tuesday

Walter Sparklin 85 former banker insurer educator and clerk to Denton town commissioners died Saturday afternoon at his niece’s home in Annapolis. Funeral service at J Virgil Moore and Son Funeral Home was conducted by Rev John E French with burial in Denton Cemetery. He taught at Harmony and Preston High School later becoming a bank teller in Lewes and cashier in Petersburg before returning home as a Hampton Roads Insurance Company agent. He served over 20 years as clerk of the Denton town commissioners resigning recently and taught Sunday School at First Methodist for more than two decades.

Alcohol Education Program To Be Held In Denton

Denton residents are invited to a Friday July 29 8 pm lecture at Grace Methodist Church by Emma Watts a Washington DC narcotic lecturer and school education supervisor. An educational film will be shown and the talk covers objective scientifically accurate alcohol information for all ages in schools churches and public programs.

A Religious Fish Found With Church Certificate

In a note from Thoreau’s Cape Cod sketches a rock fish weighing about sixty pounds yielded a certificate of membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church. The crumpled document, found inside the fish, became legible after sun exposure and ironing, recorded in the Denton Maryland Journal. Thoreau notes his Cape Cod walking tours occurred in 1849 1850 and 1855.

Merriken Wins Golf Championship at Talbot Club

Wilbert Merriken of Denton won the second annual Seniors Golf Championship at Talbot Club near Easton on Sunday. He shot 37 on the first nine and defeated Jack Chapman of Wittman 6 and 5. J Lester Evernhain of Denton won the second flight by beating Henry Collins of Easton. Sixteen Talbot Country Club golfers competed.
