Plains Program Aims At Enhanced Farm Efficiency
Plains Program targets better land use and expanded research for new crops and markets, plus stronger agricultural marketing efficiency. It calls for a permanent credit program for farmers and ranchers and a refund of the Federal gas tax on gasoline used on farms.
Wet Litter Cuts Your Poultry Profits
Rice advised building up litter in poultry houses to at least six inches before the first freeze and 10 to 12 inches in sustained freezing weather. Deep litter insulates the floor and absorbs moisture better than thin litter. Litter should be stirred regularly, especially around water joints and feeders, with small amounts of new litter added after wet spells. Superphosphate can help dry moisture.

Maryland Farm Front This Week Highlights New Proposals
Secretary Ezra Taft Benson praises the administration farm program as workable and balanced, while Maryland officials note the Conservation Reserve will likely appeal less to small farms. The plan includes land set-aside, annual payments, and restrictions on reverting land to crops, with other measures to boost surplus disposal and support family farms. Also, University of Maryland extension poultry expert Wade Rice warns that wet litter and poor ventilation in sheds raise disease risk and reduce egg production, recommending better ventilation and water management.
