Denton Chamber of Commerce set February 17 and 18 for Dollar Days with many local merchants offering bargains after a dinner at the fire hall. The group approved contacting more merchants, opposed outside tax funding for the Maryland Port Authority and Baltimore Symphony, and backed a post office and federal court building on the current government site. The annual officer election is February 27 and 1956 dues are due.

Icy Road Fatalities Near Log Cabin Woman Killed
Mrs. Sally Edith Scott of Lewes Delaware, 40, died when her car skidded on ice near Log Cabin on Route 404. Her husband Roderick Scott, 43, injured, their daughter Sandra Edith 12 unharmed. The car rolled after losing control on a curve. Mrs. Scott died at the scene. The couple, moved from Philadelphia in 1948, leave him, three siblings, and a church and club member among survivors.

Gray Plan for Maryland Schools Presented at Rockville Meeting
At a Rockville gathering on January 21, attorney Robert M. Furniss of the Maryland Petition Committee outlined the Rockville Plan to prevent forced integration. The plan would allow reassignment to non mixed schools or tuition grants for private schooling, with state and county subsidies, private school accreditation continued, and no closure of public schools anticipated. The committee hopes House Bill 696 reflecting these ideals is revived in this session.

Camp Todd Near Denton Opens July 1
Camp Todd at Silver Lake near Denton will open July 1 and run to August 11 in three two week sessions under Miss Dorothy Gamber of Salisbury. Sponsored by the Peninsula and Wicomico County Girl Scout Councils. Canoeists will explore the Choptank River four days in the third session. Miss Iliane Schadt of Denton, executive director of Peninsula Council, will mail folders to council girls in March.

Voting Machine Cards Prepared for Caroline County Voters
The Board of Election Supervisors began preparing registration cards for about 9,000 voters in Caroline County who will use voting machines at the next election for the first time. Oscar Lord leads the project with staff Dorsey Nichols, Mrs Bruno Wier, Mrs Jean Spiering, Mrs Herman Keen, and Mrs Marie Stanowski. The old election books will be discarded after data is copied to the new cards, to be inserted in new books that will be locked when not in use. It may take over a month to copy all 17 books. Carlton Mandrell and Joseph Eaton serve on the board, with a Democratic successor yet to be appointed.

Gas Tax Boost Seen as Threat to Maryland Motorists
Walter A. Cox Jr of the State Order of United Commercial Travelers called a proposed Maryland Port Authority gasoline tax increase a double edged threat to motorists. He warned state and federal gas taxes have risen three times in nine years and would hit traveling salesmen hard, undermining the 12 year highway program and potentially inviting further encroachments on road funding. He stressed the plan lacks connection to the road program and would unfairly tax an essential commodity.

State Central Committee Endorses Mahoney for Senate
Caroline County first to back George P. Mahoney with a majority of the central committee. Indian American To Speak At Methodist Churches
The Boston District Methodist Churches host a week of missionary cultivation from February 12 to 17 with Rev. Robert Pinezaddleby as guest speaker at multiple meetings. Pinezaddleby, Kiowa and son of a Methodist preacher, leads Ponca Methodist Mission in Oklahoma and is a Southern Methodist University and Perkins School of Theology graduate, age 31. The Ponca tribe, about 800 members across a 100 square mile reservation, pursues health education, homemaking, gardening, farming, and religious ministry emphasizing tribal customs, recreation, and handicraft.

Soot damages Poole's Federalsburg Men's Store
Poole's Men's Store in Federalsburg suffered extensive smoke damage after a faulty space heater produced black soot on merchandise. Firefighters found smoke issuing from the building on North Main Street around 7 45 a m. Owner Henry Poole, who was in the building Sunday night, described the damage as extensive and said a smoke damage sale will be held.

PHS Reserve Officer Aids In West Coast Disaster
Alfred J. Fletcher of the Caroline County Health Department Maryland is on temporary active duty as an engineer officer in the Public Health Service Commissioned Reserve. He serves with a Red Cross field party in the Northwest flood disaster area for 30 days assisting housing rehabilitation cost estimates for about 50,000 damaged homes and aiding in returning thousands of refugee families to rehabilitated homes.
