Longest undersea conduit laid to safeguard Norfolk phones
The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia and the Long Lines Department of AT&T completed a record undersea steel pipe conduit in Norfolk to protect submarine cables. Ten extra-strong pipes 4 inches in diameter are buried over 1 100 feet on the Eastern and 50 feet on the Southern Elizabeth River branches, totaling about 2 500 feet and weighing 337 118 pounds. The trench depths reach around 48 feet at the Southern shore ends, with sheet piling driven to prevent quay and wharf movement. The project involved Army Engineer coordination and aims to assure continuous telephone service to Norfolk and surrounding navy and army centers.
