Nelson Sabin, distinguished American baritone, will appear at Lockerman High School Tuesday, January 22. Born in New York City, he studied voice with Joseph Mason and built a coast to coast concert career. He now gives about 100 concerts per season with numerous radio appearances.
The keel is laid for a new diesel propelled ferry to serve the Sandy Point Matapeake route. The 75 vehicle capacity vessel, larger than current ferries, will have a steel hull, a modern passenger cabin, and two 800 horsepower engines with independent shafts for reliability. Built under American Bureau of Shipping survey, the ship measures 22714 feet long with a 60 foot beam.
Lieutenant John Webster Smith USNR released to inactive duty is visiting his parents Mr and Mrs Frank L Smith of Federalsburg with his wife Patricia Metzner and their son. He last served aboard the USS Scutry AM 304 after 40 months in service and participation in the Okinawa invasion along with the Korea and Japan occupations.
Denton area Boy Scout Troop 165 under James A. Wise and W A Stewart Wright runs the Victory Clothing Collection for January. Denton quota is 2000 usable garments with door to door pickup Saturday January 26 and advance drop sites January 24 25 26 at Rural Electric Appliance store next to Everngams.
The Maryland Farm Bureau closes a four day Baltimore conference with a resolution urging restoration of the state income tax to two percent for ordinary incomes and five percent for investment incomes. Howard S. Leaverton of Chester Town is elected president for 1916, with Wilson Heaps and C. E. Wise Jr. as officers. Directors cover Eastern Shore counties and executive committee picks include C. C. Phillips and Randall Spoerlin. The Associated Women choose Mrs. C. J. Kern as president and Mrs. Randall Spoerlin as secretary.
Members of the Upper Eastern Shore Medical Society from Kent Queen Annes Talbot and Caroline counties gathered at the Brick Hotel in Denton for their quarterly meeting. Dr Harold B Plummer presided and J D Coleman spoke on Blue Cross Hospital Insurance plans. Dr W H Toulson spoke on prostate carcinoma treatment. Dr Walter B Johnson served as secretary. Pvt Raymond Breeding was home over the weekend with his parents. stationed at Aberdeen. Private Philip expected home this weekend from McGuire General Hospital.
John William Fox writes from Camp Peary Virginia in January 1916, describing quiet days in barracks, decent quarters, and longing for home. He notes four weeks left of service, with February eleventh as a rough timeframe, and signs off hoping for a visit next month.
Sherman W Tribbitt visited Centreville to join the Centreville Ball Club of the Eastern Shore League. A U S N R veteran, he seeks a pro chance after sea duty and a sales job in Wilmington. Fast, skilled at double plays, a base stealer, his hitting has improved over four years. He played for the Denton Club and a Wilmington semi pro outfit. Fans wish him success as he aims for shortstop.
Lt. William H. Horsey was named commander of U.S.S. LGS on December 20, 1945, now serving in air sea rescue patrols north of Guam. He received lieutenants rank on November 1 after October leave with his parents in Denton. His younger brother Daniel R. Horsey Jr. serves in the Pacific Fleet as an electrician’s mate, recently promoted to second class.
T. M. Thomas of the Production Credit Corporation Baltimore told Denton Production Credit Association stockholders this is the first time farmers anywhere have run their own credit system. J Franklin Baker presided as president of the association which serves Caroline Talbot Dorchester Kent and Queen Annes counties. Victor Dean reported growth from 19000 to about 600000 in twelve years. Two directors from Caroline and Kent counties were reelected Austin R Murphy and William L Ford. Russell P Smith led the nominating committee. Delaware production credit reps attended. An entertainment program was offered by Lee Webster Self and the Rev Howard R McDade.
An act empowered the Department of Motor Vehicles to act as a central collecting agency for auto taxes. Car owners will pay the tax when licenses are issued and the tax bill will be shown on the tag application mailed around February 14. Fees and taxes may be paid to the DMV or to county treasurers. a 1 1/2 percent collection fee applies to city and county treasurers. Continued on Page 5.
The annual Firemen's Drive began January 7 and shows 166 donors contributing $816.50 in the first week. The local unit aims for a $3,000 goal to purchase new equipment, with many individuals and several firms listed among the contributors from multiple towns.
V Edwin Unger of Federalsburg, chairing Caroline county’s eighth war bond drive, reported a total of 650012 subscribed by district chairs, 158 percent of local quota. Richmond Fed later flagged 709000 countywide, adding 59000 to local totals. Marydel sold 3218, Goldsboro 19183, Ridgely 47047, Hillsboro 46741 against 31500 quotas.
Governor Herbert R. O Conor announced the state debt fell to 22 670 000 the lowest in over two decades after a 56 000 bond payment this week. The administration has reduced the debt by 25 487 000 and projects 4 196 000 in further 1946 47 reductions with June 30 balance at 20 902 000.
The Infantile Paralysis Funds drive is launching in Caroline County with local chairmen named in Denton Goldsboro Federalsburg Greensboro Henderson and Marydel Hillsboro Preston and Ridgely An overall county committee with E Paul Knotts chairman and Elzie Horner of the American Legion oversees activities March of Dimes mail solicitations coin boxes in schools club drives and direct gifts to local chairmen The American Legion will sponsor a Denton Armory event on February 5th.
Ralph Jackson Pritchett PM 2c has been honorably discharged at the separation center Bainbridge Maryland after 29 months of service. He was last attached to the 13th Marines 5th Marine Division. His parents reside in Greensboro.
