Peninsula Methodist WSCS Elects Officers

Mrs. Benjamin F. Johnson of Denton was elected president of the Peninsula Methodist Conference Women’s Society of Christian Service at the annual meeting January 17 at Avenue Methodist Church Milford Delaware. More than 500 women attended.

Maryland War Service Totals Show 214000 In Armed Forces

Selective service officials report about 214000 Marylanders in the armed forces during World War II and roughly 100000 discharged in the state. National totals by War and Navy departments show peak service strength of 12,320,000 with detailed breakdowns across Army Navy Marines Coast Guard and state inputs through November. Neurotic and physical faults dominated pre induction rejections with psycho neurosis leading the list at about 10 percent among examined, followed by bone and ENT issues.

Resignation of Ridgely Bank Cashier G Lawrence Wilson

G Lawrence Wilson, cashier of Ridgely Bank for twenty two years, resigned Tuesday January 15 to take effect March 1, in a move approved by the Peoples Bank of Denton board. He previously worked at the State Insurance Commissioner’s office in Baltimore and served as assistant cashier director and vice-president of the Hillsboro Queen Anne Bank at Hillsboro.

Firemen Reach $1,451.50 In The Second Week Of Annual Drive

Demton Volunteer Fire Company reports $1,451.50 raised in two weeks toward a $3,000 goal. 141 donors, including 307 contributors total, gave an average about $4.72 per person for equipment purchases. Local names include Reese Brown, Miss Eaton, Toweres Pine, Phillips Packing Co, and Cambridge Phillips Packing Co among many communities.

Street Baldwin files papers for governor nomination

Rep H Street Baldwin of Baltimore County announced he mailed his certificate of candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor to Annapolis. He attacked the CIOs political action committee and followed a bid for Democratic leaders' support against William Preston Lane Jr. of Hagerstown who became a formal candidate on December 20. Baldwin reportedly gained encouragement from Rep Thomas Lasser, who backed his bid before withdrawing.

Denton Town Clock To Be Electrified

The Caroline County Commissioners will electrify the town clock in the courthouse tower at Denton. Work will take about two weeks. In 1914 H. Clay Hobbs led a drive to fund the clock, with today’s value around $3,500. cleaning and wiring will cost about $600.

O Conor Impounds State Funds to Save Millions

Governor O Conor moves to impound 1 006 303 dollars of state appropriations for the current year. Funds will sit out of reach of departments and may be used for tax cuts postwar construction or emergency needs. If not spent this year, balances revert to the general treasury on June 30. The action, urged by the Board of Public Works, aims to reduce government costs while preserving departmental efficiency. Fiscal officers say the cut is feasible without harming operations and adds to a multi year savings record reaching about 9.63 million.

Denton couple sails for Africa mission field

The Rev Calvin Bradley of Denton Maryland and Miss Bertha Lucile Joy of Elizabeth Pennsylvania sailed for Africa on the MS Gripsholm from Jersey City January 10. Their year old son Roger traveled with them. Present at the ceremony were Rev Elmer Joy and T W Bradley parents of the outgoing missionaries, plus church and school representatives including A E Blann and Marguerite Carr. Joy was born in Swaziland and returns there as a missionary.

Dairymen's Feeding School Here Feb. 7

The annual feeding meeting will be held in the parish house, Denton, Maryland, on February 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dairymen with bangs and mastitis trouble will benefit. Door to Door Clothing Drive Call to Help Victims

Easton Airport Approved For Class II Commercial License

Easton Municipal Airport has been certified as a class II commercial airport by the Maryland State Aviation Commission. The temporary license, dated Saturday, authorizes commercial operations pending permanent structures and a radio transmitter for air to ground communications. Easton will maintain two 4,000 foot runways with a new hangar planned and a temporary administration building in place this year.

Washington College Professor Links Fascism And Communism

Dr. Earle LeBaron, head of political science at Washington College in Chestertown, spoke to the Denton Woman's Club on Is the American Dream Ended? He called Fascism and Communism alike in denying human personality and warned against totalitarian infiltration seen in France.
