Sgt James Percy Daffin arrived in Denton after honorable discharge at Ft Dix on January 8. He returned December 30, with a two day pass to visit wife and son in Blades Delaware. He enlisted May 11, 1942, worked at Nylon plant Seaford, inducted Camp Meade Md, assigned to air service group at Camp Lee Va, and served as parachute rigger in San Antonio Texas. He trained at Pyote Texas and Albuquerque New Mexico, joined 12th Air Service Group in 1943, went to India for 30 days, then China with Chennaults Flying Tigers and 14th Air Force. The group remained in China until October, then flew to India and on to New York via air, with delays en route.

Denton National Ends Best Year In History and Reelects Directors
The sixty sixth annual stockholders meeting of The Denton National Bank, held January 8, elected J Roland Chaffinch president and J Percy Bittle vice president. Ten officials were dinner guests at the Brick Hotel. Directors J Percy Bittle, J Roland Chaffinch, J Lester Everngam, Dawson O George, J Frank Lane, Frank L Nut tle reelected for one year with 885 of 1000 votes. Chaffinch reported assets rose about 1 million dollars and cash, government holdings, and high grade bonds increased substantially. checking and savings deposits rose. The bank reaffirmed a policy of maintaining sound liquidity to serve the community.

Greensboro Smoke Eaters Elect Officers At Annual Meet
At the Greensboro Volunteer Fire Company annual meeting in the fire house, Woodie Dill was reelected president and Norman Baynard became vice president. Edward G. Dean was secretary treasurer, succeeding C. A. Beaumont, with Wallace Thornton as assistant secretary treasurer. Fire chief is W Byron Poore, with Norman Baynard again as captain and Charles Jarrell Sr. as equipment custodian. Delegates to the Caroline County Firemen's Association include Clarence Pearson and others, as the company log shows 32 fires for 1915. The association will meet February 1 in Greensboro and refreshment committee members were named.

Denton resident J. Kern won first prize, a bushel of hybrid corn and a blue ribbon, for his Southern States 448 hybrid. Henry Scott and Webster Todd, both of Denton and Preston, took second and third with Southern States U. S. 13 entries, earning red and white ribbons and partial bushels. Honorable mention went to Walton R. Frampton of Denton. Fourteen entries are on display at the store.

June in January Shatters January Heat Record Across Maryland
Warm air from the Southwest and Gulf of Mexico sent Maryland and most states into an unseasonable spell as January 6 reached a record 64 degrees. The temperature rose 25 degrees from midnight Saturday to Sunday afternoon and fell only three degrees by 5 30 p m. Clouds and showers kept many indoors.

Major Charles V Moore former Assistant Division Quartermaster with the 25th Q M Co U S Army and recipient of the Bronze Star returns to his parental home in Denton after more than two years abroad. He sailed from England October 4 1942 landed France D Day plus one and served in Western Europe from 6 June 1944 to 8 May 1945.

Logan of Denton announced that part of the national war and community fund drive proceeds were sent to the Delmarva Council of Boy Scouts of America for Caroline county Scouting costs and another portion to the Children's Aid Society of Maryland. Nelson Sabin famed American baritone will appear at Lockerman High School on Tuesday evening January 22 1946 under school sponsorship. Admission is 120. Sabin praised as the American Ambassador of Song has sung for presidents and in Canada and South America. Also noted is the return of Maurice Winder Harris who was honorably discharged after three years in the Army.

Overseas Veteran Killed In Auto Crash Near Denton
A 22 year old overseas veteran John Philip Cohee died Monday night when his car struck a tree four miles south of Denton near Williston. Dorothy Eskridge and Ruth Donovan were injured slightly. Thomas Cohee, 20, was hurt. Cohee wore four battle stars and a unit citation. He was home on furlough with his grandmother in Brookview Village Dorchester County. Police attributed the crash to a driver reaching down to turn on a heater on an unfamiliar road.
