The voyage includes operations and visits to Spain, Italy, Greece and France as part of President Eisenhower's People to People program. The Newport News, a heavily air conditioned ship, produces 120,000 horsepower and distills 60,000 gallons of water daily, with an electrical output enough for a city of 40,000. A separate item notes a University of Maryland study showing Bootstrap program students on campus outperforming off-campus counterparts in military studies, with higher graduation rates and honor student percentages.

More than 5 million boys and leaders begin the 50th anniversary year during Boy Scout Week February 7 to 13. The golden anniversary spans the U S and territories with 28.5 million alumni since 1910. The Fifth National Scout Jamboree gathers 53,200 Scouts and leaders at a 2000 acre Colorado Springs camp July 22 to 28. Cub Jubilees and Field Days occur as the jamboree runs, with a third nonpartisan Get Out the Vote campaign in cooperation with the Freedoms Foundation.
