Wilmer Fell Davis Named Heart Fund Chairman

Wilmer Fell Davis of Federalsburg is named chairman of the 1960 Heart Fund in Caroline County. The drive runs February 1 through 29 with Heart Sunday on February 28, led by local volunteers to support research education and community services. Other county chairs include E. D. E. Rollins Jr in Cecil and James E. Andrews in Dorchester.

The State Police report covers accidents and incidents: Linwood Hicks of Chester Pa. in a 53 Oldsmobile lost control near Denton on Route 313, two of four women hurt, Hicks charged with reckless driving. A Jan 24 25 break in at Sun shine Laundry Federalsburg failed to access the safe, investigation ongoing. Paul Eugene Thomas of Ridgely charged with statutory rape of a 13 year old girl, held for Grand Jury action. Four injured in a Preston crash on Route 331. Storey and passengers treated at Memorial Hospital Easton. Storey to be arrested for reckless driving after release. A frost and mixed precip expected Feb 1–5 with historic dates noted.

Johnson Opens First Open House of New Session

Congressman Thomas F. Johnson of Maryland welcomed over 300 Eastern Shore constituents to his Capitol Office for the first Open House of the new session. He filed for re-election while Speaker Rayburn urged a Johnson return to the 87th Congress, praising his leadership and dedication. The event featured Hank Fort performing a commemorative song, with Johnson’s 96 year old father Judge William Johnson and wives introduced.

Stockholders Of Peoples Bank Held Yearly Meeting

The sixty second annual stockholders meeting of The Peoples Bank of Denton Maryland was held January 26 at The Woman's Club House in Denton. The meeting opened with a luncheon for stockholders and guests. a record turnout spoke to a strong year. C Percival Merrick Jr was named chairman, Mrs Elizabeth Keen secretary, and three judges were appointed for the election. Directors elected included Judson Bateman Preston William Croll H H Nuttle E T Orme and H Earle Smith of Denton and Bernard Kibler of Queen Anne. Afterward directors organized with Nuttle as president Earle Smith vice president Orme executive vice president Lacey Orme cashier La Verne McNeal C C Ringgold assistant cashiers Grace S Andrew teller Frances I F Johnson Elizabeth Greenly Maude S Ferrick Dorothy S Jones bookkeepers Layman J Redden attorney. The board praised the staff for loyalty and industry.

Daytona to televise compact car races at Daytona

Daytona International Speedway announces a televised program on Sunday Jan 31 from 3 to 4 30 p m featuring compact car races late model pole qualifiers and a world speed record attempt with 10 000 prize. The event includes a 50 mile race and a 3 lap women drivers event on the 3 81 mile track with purses totaling 14 425 and overall winter action totaling about 150 000 in prize money.

Farm Bureau Plans For Teachers Pay Raise Meeting

The Caroline County Bank Greensboro held its 58th annual stockholders meeting Tuesday January 19. Denton Brethren Fellowship Supper Set for Feb 7

The Church of the Brethren Youth Fellowship in Mardela District will hold its annual fellowship supper at the Denton Church of the Brethren on February 7. The program includes a district youth report on the Brethren Youth Seminar in Washington and the United Nations in New York. Girl Scouts appoint Mrs McCord district chairman

Mrs Harriett McCord of Oxford Maryland was approved as Chair man of District III by the Peninsula Girl Scout Council Board on January 16 1960 in Salisbury Maryland. District III covers Talbot Caroline and Dorchester Counties. McCord has long been active in youth work and local church and civic groups.

Dr Kress To Discuss Advances In Reading

Dr. Roy A. Kress will report on Advances in Remedial and Corrective Reading at Loyola College during a three day workshop on vision and reading problems of some school children. He directs the diagnostic and remedial division at Syracuse University and will speak at the general sessions. The workshop runs Friday through Sunday January 29 to 31, sponsored by Loyola College graduate division the Maryland Optometric Association and the Maryland Chapter of the Optometric Extension Program Foundation. Broiler Field Day at Salisbury Sub-Station

University of Maryland Extension poultry specialist James L. Nicholson invites guests to the Salisbury Sub-Station on February 3 for a tour of the new 32 pen broiler house and the first broiler study in a 350 foot experimental house. The event includes demonstrations of eight broiler crosses, separate male and female data, nutrition trials with fish and plant proteins, and on site yield and grade data, with researchers presenting results and rations.

Beef Cattle Field Day Set at UMD January 30

University of Maryland Beef Barns hosts an inspection tour at 9 30 a m to open the Beef Cattle Field Day on January 30. Co chairs are Boyd T Whittle and John Burk. Morning sessions move to Symons Hall at 10 45 a m with talks by Dr John Foster and afternoon features Dr W W Albert of Illinois on moisture in field shelled corn and harvest losses. Lunch at University Dining Hall available. A panel on beef cattle improvement follows with further talks on ruminant digestion. The Stockmen short course runs January 27 to 29.

Caroline County Bird Club Meeting in Denton Friday

The Caroline County Bird Club will hold its monthly meeting this Friday evening January 20 at 8:00 in the Denton Health Center Building. Two films, The Whispering Crane and Maryland Wildlife, will be shown. The public is urged to attend.
