ZIP Codes Imprinted on Postmarks Nationwide Plan

Postmaster General John A. Gronouski announced a program to imprint ZIP Codes on postmarks at over 33,000 offices, with 1,701 large-city offices exempted. Rubber stamps and steel dies will be updated at a total three year cost around 200 thousand dollars, offset by savings to mailers and taxpayers. The change aims to speed mass pre sorting and improve address accuracy across 72 billion annual pieces. The plan abbreviates states to two letters and applies to all post offices except the largest multi ZIP Code facilities.
