Half Billion Dollars Flowed Into U S Maritime Economy
A 1955 report by the Committee of American Steamship Lines shows 492.8 million dollars in voyage expenses for 15 U S lines with government subsidies totaling 108.5 million. Wages to seamen, dockage, shipyard repairs, and operating costs funded wharfage, insurance, and equipment purchases across shipping, farming, factories, and maritime services. Subisdy payments aim to sustain an adequate merchant marine for defense and peacetime trade.
