Marine Photographers Describe First Night On Beachhead
Marine Sergeant E Francis and Private First Class Kenneth Altfather, both combat photographers, landed with assault waves and filmed the action on the beach. They dug in, slept briefly amid gunfire, and then engaged Japanese troops in a culvert before grenades and close combat ended the threat. Francis, 23, son of Captain M. E. Francis, served since shortly after Pearl Harbor. Altfather, 28, previously served 1933–37 and is on his second Corps cruise after Cold War II.
