Pfc. Emory C. Jones son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver H. Jones of Denton graduated with the latest aerial gunnery class at Harlingen Army Air Field Texas. He earned gunner wings received a promotion and will join an aerial combat team unless retained as an instructor. The seven week course covered turret handling weapon maintenance and target practice on Liberator bombers under simulated combat conditions.

Phillips Workers To Get Overtime Pay
The Regional War Labor Board granted time and a half overtime for about 800 hourly workers at Phillips Packing Company in Cambridge Maryland. The pay applies to all work over 40 hours weekly and 8 hours daily in processing and canning perishable vegetables and rations for the Army. The ruling reverses a June decision that denied overtime exemptions, aided by War Foods Administration and War Manpower Commission certification to retain staff.

Mrs Oscar Willey Wins $50 Prize In Southern States Contest
Mrs Lillian Willey of near Denton Maryland won fifty dollars in cash in a Southern States Cooperative pancake mix naming contest. Her entry Southern Breakfast was selected from 185 entries submitted by 482 farm women. The prize was announced by Mrs Sarah Porter Elis director of the Farm Home Service. Mrs Willey serves on the Farm Home Advisory committee, which, along with committees in Virginia West Virginia Maryland and Delaware, aims to improve rural homemaking methods.

Weir Returns Home for Furlough Visit
Corporal Robert D. Weir of the Army Corps of Engineers arrived August 6 for a furlough visit to his parents Mr and Mrs Wm H Weir in Denton. He was among the first American soldiers to land in England on June 9 1942 and earned three bronze stars for the African invasion campaign and Italian operations. He served overseas twenty six months.

Legion Names Jennings Maryland Department Commander
John W. Jennings, Baltimore accountant and Balti more and Ohio Railroad Post No. 81 member, was elected and installed as Maryland Department Commander of the American Legion at the 26th annual convention in Baltimore. He topped Lawrence Fink by 89 votes. Samuel Cohen had 28. Other officers were elected, and the group adopted a resolution opposing coddling German and Italian POWs in the area. The convention also sent Jennings and past commander Dr. Blake to the National Convention in Chicago.

Fire Threatens Railroad Bridge Near Queen Anne
The Denton Volunteer Fire Company was called to Queen Anne Tuesday evening about 7 15 where an underground fire threatened to undermine the south pillar of the Pennsylvania overhead railroad bridge. A quantity of rail ties and other bridge timbers had previously been used to help make the fill at the bottom of the pillar. Fire had eaten well into this lumber two or three feet underground. Several hundred gallons of water were pumped into a trench made by railroad employees.
