Ensign Burdette Nuttle entered service August 16, 1913. He attended an indoctrination course at Princeton University for two months, followed by two months at an Armed Guard school in Norfolk, Virginia. He was assigned to a Liberty ship in the Pacific. He is the son of Mrs. Fred B. Nuttle of Denton and the late Mr. Nuttle, married to Emily Jopp, with a young daughter. A graduate of Caroline High School and Washington College, he worked with Nuttle Lumber and Coal Company before induction.

In Hawaii Thomas G. Parks a Seaman Second Class in the United States Navy is stationed in Honolulu Hawaii He joined the service in August 1943 leaving his job at the Sparrows Point shipyard He is the son of Mr and Mrs W B L Parks Sr of Denton He previously served as a mechanic at the Bullock and White garage in Denton for 19 years before entering naval service.

Japanese Beetles Collected In Denton
Norbert Drews collected over 100 quarts of Japanese beetles in Denton starting Monday at season end. He operated 809 traps in town and leased others to farmers, noting a beetle crop decline. Maryland University scientists attribute the drop to last year’s drought that killed grubs and a milder drought this summer. The pests favored mallows althea and crepe myrtle in some gardens. Clement Noble led the campaign in Caroline County, and Cpl Robert D Weir returned home on furlough after 26 months in Africa and Italy.

Navy enlistment and training path of James W. Jopp
James W. Jopp enlisted in the Navy May 25 1942 in Baltimore Maryland. He trained at Norfolk Virginia for boat handling then underwent three months schooling in Morehead Kentucky before transfers to Boston Massachusetts and New York City and later assignment to the West Coast aboard an air craft carrier. He had a brief leave in February and prior to enlisting worked for the duPont Company in Seaford.

Dr. Gilbert W. Mead the president of Washington College announced the appointment of Prof. Frederick W. Dumschott as business manager to succeed the late Inie James W. Johns. Dumschott, a 20 year alumnus from Waterbury Conn, has served as assistant professor of political science and acting director of athletics and was a standout on the Flying Pentagon basketball team. He later coached basketball and is assistant secretary of the College Alumni Association.
