A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association found mortality in acute myocardial infarction rises with older age due to more frequent severe attacks, not age itself. Doctors studied 1,047 patients aged 30 to 88, dividing them into good and poor risk groups, noting prognosis depends on attack severity and comorbidity rather than age.
Army engineers in Yokohama reclaimed and repaired heavy equipment from Pacific islands, saving over 34 million dollars for U.S. taxpayers. In 12 months they fixed about 10,000 items at a cost of 6 million, with much of the gear sourced from the Far East to support Korea operations. The program began after World War II and expanded to thousands of items yearly.
A 1925 Cornell experiment showed a scientist survive two hours in 201 F dry air. Wright Field tests indicate even higher tolerances under special conditions. For cold, pilots in Britain survived about 30 minutes in 40 F water. prolonged exposure risks heart failure. Body temperatures record a fever of 113 F recovery, though above 109 F is usually fatal. A drop to 78 F briefly is not fatal, with a Chicago case of 60.8 F.
The belief that leap years boost marriages is refuted. Since the Civil War only 1896 and 1920 saw higher leap year marriage rates than adjacent years. Dr Louis I Dublin of Metropolitan Life notes the pool of unmarried people is depleted after World War II, limiting 1952 increases.
Local Army recruiter Joseph A. Adams announces a new 24 month enlistment term for draft age applicants. Eligible men aged 18 to 26, meeting mental and physical standards, may enlist in the Regular Army, attend technical schools, and possibly apply to Army Officers Candidate School.
