Census Of Agriculture To Be Taken In The Fall
The census will be carried out by 30,000 enumerators who are local residents and will begin after farmers receive the questionnaire two weeks before census starts. Enumerators must pass a qualifying test and complete 12 hours of training. The act requires confidentiality with census data and oath-taking by census takers. Dean Cairns notes the census aims to capture rapid changes in Maryland farms during a likely five year period.

Orientation planting edge boosts corn yield and saves moisture
U S Department of Agriculture scientists report that placing seed corn kernels with points down and flat sides parallel to rows conserves soil moisture. Orientation planting reduces ground sun exposure by up to 90 percent, increasing moisture for the car-setting stage. Yields in limited tests rose by 3 to 23 bushels per acre. Methods include tape positioning and modified planters to place kernels correctly.
