Purdue economist outlines 1957 farm outlook in Indiana

A. M. Nichter, Purdue agricultural economist, told Indiana farmers that 1957 net income for U S farmers should rise 5 to 10 percent over 1956 thanks to larger government payments. Demand for farm products remains strong and prices are likely to firm, though costs rise 3 to 5 percent. Prices for machinery and supplies should stay high, with hogs, corn, oats, soybeans and wheat all seen at modestly higher or near 1956 loan levels. Dairy, poultry, and egg prices may dip early 1957. farm land values should hold steady, and overall family living costs are not expected to ease.
