Carroll County expects a record turnout with 11,002 registered voters this year, surpassing 1954’s 10,939. Absentee ballots total 426 mailed by Tuesday with Nov 3 deadline. 280 already returned. Chief Gib Underhill reports Halloween window soaping and ribbon-cutting razor-blade mischief by youths.
Union Bank and Trust Company will be closed on Tuesday November 6 in observance of Election Day.
Democratic election officials and residents of Rock Creek Jackson and Deer Creek precincts are invited to a cooperative supper at Camden Community Building Thursday at 7 p.m. DST. Candidates will attend and rally plans will be set. Rolls butter coffee provided by the committee.
Delphi Oracles look to end a decade of Monticello dominance as they host the Monticello Indians after nine straight Delphi wins. The night features a tight rivalry with high stakes as Delphi seeks to rebound from a 26 to 6 loss at Riley Park to Rensselaer, who clinched the Northern State conference crown with a 4-0 record.
Sharon Gardner of Camden Marcia Langston of Flora Barbara Barnes of Burlington and Mertha Zook of Delphi represented their 4-H clubs on a fire prevention trip to Indianapolis on Sunday. They were accompanied by several adults and attended the ice show and dinner at Hollyhock Hill hosted by the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Mulberry.
David R. Baum, local attorney, was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court in a Friday ceremony in Washington, D.C. Governor George Craig also gained admission. Baum, on 10 days of Army Reserve duty, returned home Saturday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. David MacPhail of Lanarkshire Scotland spent five days with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Robertson near Burlington. The Robersons, who befriended the MacPhails during World War II, hosted the guests before the MacPhails continued to California for a visit.
Among those attending the IU Northwestern game at Bloomington on Saturday were Dr and Mrs George Wagoner Mrs Steve Young Mrs Ralph Sullivan Mr and Mrs George Revington Mrs and Mrs John Pastor.
Democratic County Chairman John Merrell and GOP Chairman George Obear certify election board workers to County Clerk Joe Tolen. Inspections will be at all voting places with listed inspectors and judges by party across multiple precincts including Adams, Burlington, Carrollton, Deer Creek, Clay, Walther, and further names and assignments noted.
Indiana University queried Delphi High School Principal Noel Douglass about the fate of the 20 students who made the upper ten percent. Of these, 14 entered college and 4 took full time jobs, with one married and one unlocated. Names include Lois Young IU student, John Wagoner IU student, Laura Heffley Illinois, and Barbara Browne listed as unknown.
Season basketball tickets go on sale Tuesday November 6 in the office of Noel Douglass the high school principal. Adult tickets are five dollars and student tickets two dollars. No phone orders accepted.
Mrs. Lillie Terrell a 31 year old of Delphi pled guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a 16 year old boy. She was fined 250 dollars and costs and sentenced to six months in the Indiana Women’s prison. Deputy Sheriff John Miller and Mrs Miller took her to the prison on Friday afternoon to begin serving term.
Gail Longshore Scott files for divorce from Gabrel Walter Scott in Carroll circuit court claiming cruelty. They wed September 22 1956 and separated October 28. She seeks custody of an unborn child and five thousand dollars alimony with attorney David R. Baum.
Deputy Sheriff Miller and two auxiliaries recount a wild chase along 218 between Delphi and Camden. A 14 year old driver cut a freight and crossed the tracks just before the train, then fled but was halted at Camden after a 90 mph pursuit. He confessed he had no license and was returned home to face the prosecutor.
Roy C Clauser mayor of Delphi will chair the 1956 Christmas Seal Sale in Carroll County to fund tuberculosis control programs. The drive runs November 15 through December with city and township volunteers aiding the effort including Mrs. Mikesell Adams Mrs. Flora Burlington and Psi Iota Xi Flora among others. The sale supports chest X ray tuberculin patch testing and health education to eradicate tuberculosis.
Democratic candidate Claude R. Wickard will host a three hour Demothon to address Indiana voters. From 6 to 9 p m he will answer questions via a state wide radio network and field calls or mail questions to Wickard for Senator Headquarters in Indianapolis. The program will air on WIRE WSAL WWCA WOWO WTHI WBIW WGBF WKBV and WNDU with possible additional stations.
Helen Cunningham 71, born in Camden, died of a heart attack in Fort Wayne. She lived on a Jackson Township farm, was house-mother at Butler University sorority for three years, and is survived by adopted son James of Fort Wayne and brother Carl McFarland of Delphi. Curtis McCain and Carl McFarland attended the funeral Monday.
County Auditor Ada Roach received a check for 50025.35 from the State representing the county's third quarter gasoline tax share. The prior year third quarter payment was 48620.49.
Sherman Fife, longtime employee at the local telephone company, sustained a severe head injury when a tone meter fell on him Wednesday morning. He received five stitches and returned to work after a visit to a local doctor.
The Citizen endorses Wickard citing farmer knowledge and local roots. Biographies of McCarty and Penn outline wartime service, engineering work, and community affiliations. Voters go to polls next Tuesday after a fierce campaign with final rallies Saturday night.
Ballot instructions say all time question votes must be counted regardless of how marked by voters. The four questions cover time standards and daylight saving with paths for yes on first or third question. Delphi rallys feature Charles Halleck and Joe Smith with a torch parade. Polls open 6 am to 6 pm with a packed slate of local and state candidates and many voting places listed across Carroll County.
Ned Rule, senior at Delphi High School, will join a panel on Purdue station WBAA next Thursday at 11 a.m. to discuss relaxing tourist restrictions between the Soviet Union and the United States. The program includes students from Lafayette schools and Ned as representatives of the local student body.
Mrs Don Leitzke is a patient in Methodist hospital Indianapolis where she undergoes observation and treatment.
Twillie Tully of Jefferson Township is among four Indiana 4-H Electric members chosen for the project achievement trip. They will depart Indianapolis by train on Sunday evening, November 4, and return from Washington by plane on Thursday evening, November 8, with all expenses paid by the Indiana Electric Association.
The Carroll circuit court dismissed the divorce action of Carl Stonebraker and Ruth Stonebraker on the plaintiff's motion.
The Carroll county high schools launch the 1956-57 basketball campaign this week with official openings today and most slates starting Friday. Camden meets Flora in Flora, Burlington hosts Tipton township, Deer Creek welcomes Sugar Creek at Camden, Cutler starts November 6 at Prairie township, and Delphi begins November 16 hosting Northwestern of Howard county.
Rev. E. E. Coleman will be installed as pastor of the Rockfield Presbyterian church on Sunday evening November 4. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. Frederick Allen with Rev. Malcolm McNeal moderating and Rev. Elbert Smith and Rev. E. E. Morris handling charges to the congregation. The public is invited to attend this ceremony.
Mrs. Charles Hendrix of Burlington fell at the Presbyterian church in Delphi and suffered a probable broken hip. She was transported to Memorial hospital Logansport by Eikenberry ambulance after attending the Achievement Day luncheon.
John N. Kirkendall of Burling ton has been pledged to the Delta Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of Michigan where he is listed as a freshman.

Mr and Mrs Dale Day of Bloomington have a son Kevin Lee. Mrs Day is Donna Oyler, daughter of Russell Oyler of near Flora. Mr and Mrs Richard Downs of Delphi have a daughter born October 26 at St Elizabeth. Mr and Mrs Ralph Robinson Jr of Lafayette have a daughter at Home hospital. Mr and Mrs Ralph Robinson Sr of Delphi are paternal grandparents. Mr and Mrs Ronald Long of Delphi have a son born October 25 at St Elizabeth hospital. Born to Mr and Mrs Zeller Graham of Flora a daughter at Home hospital Lafayette October 30.
