Healing Art Knowledge From a Dutch Text Intro to Japan
A nineteenth century account describes how Western medical knowledge reached Japan via a Dutch anatomy book around 1771. A Japanese physician and three colleagues translated it, challenging prior teaching after studying its illustrations. By 1868 the Imperial University, with German teachers, offered a four year medical course for 100 students, with German as the medical language. Today most professors are Japanese aside from two honorary Germans, and after four years graduates can practice, with licensing required for minor medical schools.

Alcohol from sawdust could become profitable source of alcohol
Samples of alcohol made from sawdust have been sent to the Department of Agriculture from a large sawmill. A distilling plant turns out several barrels daily, producing ethyl alcohol indistinguishable from grain alcohol after processing sawdust with acid to convert it into dextrose before distillation. If profitable, this by product could turn nuisance sawdust into revenue and extend to straw cane and cornstalks.
