Knowledge of the Healing Art Through a Dutch Book
A Dutch anatomy textbook introduced Western medical knowledge to Japan around 1771 via a Japanese physician and three friends who translated it. They challenged prior teachings after dissecting a criminal to verify truths. In 1868 Imperial University opened with a German-taught medical school, 100 students per course, four years. Today most teachers are Japanese with two German honorary professors. After four years, graduates can practice without further exams, and many minor medical schools issue licenses after exams.
