Thompson Reports Ohio Canal Debate and Redistricting Outlook
Mr. Thompson returned from Columbus saying canal policy remains contested and the Painter bill likely dead due to lack of appropriations. He urges at least 250 000, preferably 500 000, to restore the Miami and Erie canal. The meeting drew large town turnout, except Defiance, with St Marys sending 150 people none of whom worked on canals. Thompson observed Republican caucus activity and predicted redistricting will shift districts to favor certain interests with Putnam moving to the fourth district and Fulton replacing Putnam.
