Ozone of good government calls for reform in Defiance

The Express argues spring campaigns expose long neglected issues and blames the dominant party for tax burdens and weak morals. It urges caution in voting, endorses Republican nominees for reform, and warns that fiscal strain and business losses threaten Defiance’s health and prosperity.

Republicans Of Defiance Nominated Good Ticket

The Defiance Republican convention at the courthouse Saturday elected a strong ticket after spirited contests. Frank T. Betts was nominated for mayor by acclamation. L. E. Ralston won city marshal. Jacob Smith and John Hamilton contested street commissioner. Judge F. L. Hay named city solicitor. Township nominations followed with Wm Ort for justice of the peace and A. J. Sanford for long-term trustee. The meeting closed with confidence in victory this spring.

Defiance College Endsowment Tied To Palmer Gift

Dr Latchaw returns from New York with a conditional $60,000 endowment plan for Defiance College tied to a $20,000 local match. If Defiance and Defiance county raise the extra funds, a university de facto would form. otherwise Latchaw may relocate.

Judges Disqualified in Subdivision Case Before March 25 Sale

In court on Thursday attorney J M Lawson filed an affidavit of prejudice against all common pleas judges in the subdivision. A sale of the C L and M Ry is set for Tuesday March 25, with a prior motion to set aside the apprisement to be heard Saturday. Judge Donnelly adjourned court Friday and will hand down opinions in B O cases in about two weeks. Chas Shoup was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary after burglary verdict. He will proceed to Columbus via Sheriff McCarty next Thursday to appear before pension examiners. Deputy W W Heater and M J Walz toured the countryside. County Surveyor H F Tobe surveyed in Highland township. Probate Judge J H Hockman visited Tiffin township for farm work. Auditor W A Snider was in Toledo today.
