Chautauqua programs entertain large Island Park crowd

Despite threatening weather and a heavy shower, hundreds attended the Chautauqua opening at Island Park. The Baxter Concert Company and Hasler Concert Company drew strong crowds with performances noting Mr Baxter’s bass voice and Mrs Hasler’s soprano. Other items include a biblical lecture by Prof Goodrich, weather considerations, and community notes from Defiance area.

Miss Helen Weindoerfer hosted a four-table whist gathering on Wayne street Wednesday July 31 with flowers as decorations. Mrs Frank Rakestraw won best score after the games, and guests included Miss Elizabeth Carter of Danville Illinois and Estella Morrison of Indianapolis Indiana. Hostess Elizabeth Woodward invited about twenty five young people for an informal evening at the Woodward home on Jefferson street with card tables, refreshments afterward.

Chicken Fanciers Form New Defiance Association

An enthusiastic meeting at the Citizens Opera House organized the Defiance Poultry and Pet Stock Association. Officers include President Dr. N G Woodward and Vice President Michael Ziegler. Members hope to reach two hundred, with a $1 fee. A committee will draft by laws and plan a big poultry show in January or February.

Mattock reunion survives near Bryan as barn struck by lightning

Forty guests avoided a barn after choosing the residence during a rain delay. Lightning destroyed the T. E. Hicksville Bank Reopens After Comptroller Order

The National Bank of Hicksville reopened for business today after assets were delivered to directors by order of the comptroller of currency. H. S. Frren, Receiver, announced the revival to Defiance residents and local interest followed the event.

Disastrous Hail Storm Ravages Defiance Area

A severe hail storm hit Defiance Thursday evening around 6 o clock causing window damage in town and heavy crop losses in Richland township. Walnut sized stones covered the ground and shattered about ninety panes at Scharffenberger's greenhouse while Winterich reports minor glass damage. Dispatches from Southern Michigan note additional serious hail effects in that region.
