Canoe Capsizing Drowns Two Men at Island Park
In Defiance on August 7, Virgil Mansfield and Karl Krotz drowned during a canoe race on the Maumee River before hundreds of spectators. The two occupants of the leading canoe capsized after a collision while paddling on one side. Despite rescue attempts, both men disappeared and were later recovered as efforts to revive them failed.

Battery Returns After Six Days Camp in Defiance
After a six days camp in Defiance the second battery C N G returned to Toledo by a special train. The officers and men praised Defiance citizens and hospitality. The event featured target practice, a reception with the Sixth Regiment Band, and an imitation war dance for visitors. Marguerite Kegel and Edna Babch visited afterward, with other local residents returning from travel.
