Professor W H Bender in charge of the training school department at the Iowa State Normal spent a month with his family at the Tomlinsons in Farmer township and will resume teachers institute work until the fall term. The Benders will rejoin family in Cedar Falls after September first. Bender previously worked as a cheese maker at William Center Ney and Farmer.
The Defiance Board of Education met in adjourned session with five members present. They audited and allowed bills for Wood L Smith Cement Weigerding livery repairs lumber mops and salaries. Mrs Gertrude Root Halstede resigned as teacher and Miss Marjorie Lamb was elected to replace her. The repairs committee awarded three steel ceiling bids to R C Watson over two others and approved window curtain bids from E N Lewis and J A Kitchel with Kitchel’s bid of 24.40 the lowest. The board also invited bids on coal for the district and adjourned.
The Knights of the Red Cross elected officers Tuesday evening with S A Hull as Commander and William Sharp as lieutenant commander Others named include Wm Bruner A V Sieren Wm Ort J W Lynde Jas Lafontaine John Sieren and John K Ort Five candidates were initiated after the election bringing total initiates to fifteen over the last three meetings The group reports booming activity.
